Can there be varying degrees of Meniere’s disease?

Question by Skyblooms: Can there be varying degrees of Meniere’s disease?
I’ve always thought my dizzy days weren’t as harsh as what true Meniere’s consists of. Although I’ve had tinnitus for a very long time and dizziness, I’ve never become literally sick to my stomach and have very rarely experienced true vertigo…the type that makes it impossible to stand up or open your eyes.

I do however have such a terrible feeling of pressure in my head and around my nasal passages and eyes, on the bad days. On thosedays, I have it all day long, from the time I get up, and it’s only cured after sleeping the next night. Lately I have chills on those days…including goosebumps…although I’m not cold. I’ll have trouble standing in one spot and can’t STAND being around anyone. There’s often a shaky vibrating feeling to my head but when I get the chance to lay down later in the day and cover my eyes, my head feels much better, even if I don’t actually fall asleep.

I’ve recently read that sinusitis can be confused with Meniere’s and although I’ve always expected it would be obvious if I have sinus troubles or allergies, I’m starting to wonder if sinusitis is what I have. But when I read that the symptoms of sinusitis are similar, including a spacey feeling in the head, I wonder if those symptoms aren’t coming from the anti-histamines that sinus suffers take. I mainly stay away from meds with anti-histamines or sleeping aid pain relievers because I don’t want any additional spacey and lost of control feeling like they cause.

I’ve had tinnitus since I was 22 years old and I do have severe days but I’ve become accustomed to it and it only drives me crazy on the bad dizzy days. On my very bad dizzy and ear noise days, using the vacuum cleaner is the only time I can concentrate but it still doesn’t alleviate the horrible feeling of pressure within my head.

I know of two people with Meener’s disease and, they have it in the falling down and crawling stages when it hits, usually from to much salt in their diet’s. They simply cannot function unless they are laying on the ground and puking. This is meener’s disease in it’s full capacity. What you describe is a very mild stage if in fact you even have it. It could be sinuses or a full head congestion. Salt is the in between answer that sets this off.

A few questions about MRI scans?

Question by M: A few questions about MRI scans?
My mom wants me to get an MRI scan because, basically, our town’s well water can cause brain cancer so every person in my town has the option of getting them free. But I never drink our water anyways, but that’s not the point.
I have tinnitus, and I hear the scan is really loud. My tinnitus worsening is like my biggest fear and I’ve heard that people get it after the scan because of the noise. Is it true? Because if my hearing is going to be an issue.. I refuse going.
What should I expect? basically, what’s a short synopsis of everything that goes on when you’re getting a scan?
I’m supposed to see my doctor about the scan tomorrow (Monday) and 7 AM so he can ask me questions about my symptoms and such, and then get the scan a few days later.
But the thing is, I don’t want to get the scan because I don’t have any symptoms of brain cancer at all, and I’m 13 years old and I hear there’s a lot of radiation in them? Or is that CAT scans? I don’t know. So if you could tell me how loud the scans are, what they’re like and if in your opinion you think I should get one, that would be great! =D

Best answer:

Answer by Isabella H
I work in a radiology clinic so I know a bit about MRI scans. They are loud, but they will give u headphones ect. to prevent any damage to your ears. depending on what machine you are being scanned in it’ll be like 10-20minutes, and you have to lie very still the whole time. MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance imaging, so there is no radiation involved. Alot of the MRI machines are very small and alot of people can feel claustrophobic.

Could this be anxiety? please help?

Question by : Could this be anxiety? please help?
Hey everybody, I’m seventeen, physically active, 6’2″ and slim. i went to the doctors about a week or two after school started in september to see about a skipped heartbeat i had, an i had a blood pressure test and echocardiogram. the blood pressure test showed my blood pressure was 140/90. since it was mainly the systolic that was elevated, he said it’s probably white coat syndrome and i was just nervous, since i had a physical in august and it was fine then. I went back for another blood pressure test and again it was elevated, but i was nervous again, and he said have it done in a cvs so i’m not as stressed. i was stressed ever since my first appointment. the extra beat is gone, but i had new symptoms in the course of a month that never happened more than one symptom at once and never when i was at soccer and usually not in school(when my mind was somewhere else). these symptoms included:pounding heartbeat, heartbeat in my ears, trouble getting to sleep at night, fatigue during the day, headache in the temple area/right above the nose, muscle ache, irritability, inability to enjoy social events because of the anxiousness/symptom, cold sweat in hands an/or feet, malaise or muscle weakness(only happened 2 or 3 times), and a sunburn feeling on my chest. these would rotate and usually didnt happen regularly. i have improved over the past few weeks and the only symptoms i still have (besides the occasional pounding heartbeat) are ringing in my ears, and pulse in my ears, as well as a wooshing sound. these always occur seperately and the whooshing happens when i stretch out and yawn when i just get up out of bed and the ringing happens in general(when it’s quiet, usually at night), while the pounding i hear when i run. i also had a bad cold a few weeks ago and sometimes when i swallow water my ears will crackle and sometimes when i sniffle my ears will feel blocked. could this be something like tinnitus or could it be fluid thats amplifying these sounds? any tips would be greatly appreciated

Q&A: Syncope – how big of a concern is that?

Question by catman91: Syncope – how big of a concern is that?
First a little about my physique:
I’m male, 19 years old, 6 foot 4 inches tall and weigh somewhere between 135 and 140 pounds. I know that I’m kind of badly underweight, it’s not that I don’t eat much, I just have a very hard time gaining weight. My dad was like that too when he was young, so I guess it’s genetics.
I’ve had some issues with low blood pressure for quite a few years now, and whenever I lie in bed for a few minutes and then get up too quickly, I get kind of dizzy. When that happens, I have to sit down for a few minutes and drink some cold water and I’m fine.
The thing is that those “attacks” sometimes occur at places I can’t sit down for a longer period of time. The first time that happened was as a Muse concert. Towards the end, I noticed my limbs becoming heavy, my hearing was muffled, I started hearing my heartbeats (I was kinda freaked out by this part specifically, because in the movies, that’s usually just before the crap hits the fan) well as a very predominant tinnitus and my vision was fading away. About 50% of my field of vision was already blacked out when I realized I had to do something. Luckily, we were standing in the very front row, just at the fence, so I called a security guy to me and told him I needed to get out quickly. He and another security then pulled me out of the audience, over the fence and walked me over to the first aid guy, who gave me a cup of water. I sat down, quickly gulped down the water and asked for another one. After just about 2 minutes, I felt totally fine, got back in the audience and enjoyed the last 2 songs.

Overall, similar incidents happened to me 5 times in the last 2 years, and I’ve boiled them down to a few common factors:
- room heated up, crowded and neither air conditioning nor ventilation
- dehydration
- general physical and/or mental exhaustion

I’ve googled for the symptoms, and I think syncope is the most plausible explanation.
“Typical symptoms progress through dizziness, clamminess of the skin, a dimming of vision or greyout, possibly tinnitus, complete loss of vision, weakness of limbs to physical collapse.”
That’s a short extract from Wikipedia describing the symptoms of a syncope, and it almost perfectly matches up to what I experience, except I usually manage to handle the attack before the actual physical fainting.

At least until last Saturday. I was riding the bus with a friend, and I started to notice the first few indicators, so I decided we’d leave at the next stop and grab something to eat in the subway. As we were approaching the stop, I got up and walked to the door. Until then I thought I could easily get to the Subway without a problem.
But just as the bus stopped, it kind of accelerated a little again and then suddenly came to a complete stop. I think I was off guard for that because I was already preparing to step out (my memory of the last few seconds is a little dizzy too) and somehow started wobbling away and I couldn’t hold my body weight anymore. It felt like I was wobbling there for at least 10 seconds, but my friend told me it wasn’t much more than a second.
Anyway afterwards (I don’t remember that part) I fell face first into the door. Next thing I remember is sitting on the sidewalk. I couldn’t have been out that long, since the bus was still standing there. My nose was bleeding a little, but it was only a few drops, so I wasn’t very worried because I figured if it was broken, there wouldn’t just be a little blood.
My friend kindly got me a bottle of water, and the whole thing was over within minutes.
Actually once when it felt it starting I did a chocolate bar I found in my jacket, but it didn’t really help.
I’m thinking the problem is mostly about fluid not sugar, espacially since I think i already eat more than enough sugar each day. But I guess it wouldn’t be a bad idea to always take some beverage with me when I go out.
“Actually once when I felt it starting I did eat a chocolate bar[...]”
that makes more sense ^^

Its not a big deal at all if you can see it coming and get to a place where you can recover before you pass out. The only real danger comes from actually passing out in a circumstance where its dangerous – like when driving a car or falling and hitting your head. It might all be a matter of physics. Being tall and thin, its easy for blood to pool in your legs and not so easy to get it pumped back up to your heart. Thin people tend to have a very low capacity to store excess fluids, so your blood volume can drop rapidly if your are sweating or drinking alcohol or caffeine. Staying fully hydrated and keeping your legs moving (instead of standing still) are two things that might help.

Do I have anemia/Am I anemic?

Question by Chii: Do I have anemia/Am I anemic?
I posted this question yesterday and I’ve only gotten 1 answer so I figured if I put the question up with a more clear question title.

Well I wasn’t feeling well so I started looking up symptoms I have. I found I have multiple signs of anemia. I really don’t think I have it and I sure don’t want to have it but I don’t know what to do.
heres a check list of all the symptoms and what I do and don’t have

* Fatigue ✔

* Weakness ✔ (i think that may be because I’m lazy)

* Fainting

* Breathlessness ✔

* Heart palpitations (rapid or irregular beating) ✔

* Dizziness ✔

* Headache ✔

* Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) (what does tinnitus mean? I do have a ringing in my ear but I’m not sure if its *tinnitus*

* Difficulty sleeping ✔ (EVERY SINGLE NIGHT)

* Difficulty concentrating ✔

Common signs include:

* Pale complexion ✔ (I’ve been told, though I’m not sure)

* The normally red lining of the mouth and eyelids fades in color (I don’t know)

* Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia An abnormally rapid heart rate, usually defined as a rate greater than 100 beats per minute. An abnormally rapid heart rate, usually defined as a rate greater than 100 beats per minute. ) (I’m not sure)

* Abnormal menstruation (either absence of periods or increased bleeding) ✔ (Past few)

I really don’t think I have it but I don’t know. I don’t want to waist my mom’s time
also I 13 and PROUDLY a virgin so don’t start saying pregnancy symptoms please.
kindergarten I was one of those kids that pretended to be sick everyday and now my parents only believe me if I’m throwing up. Any suggestions on that

See a doctor and have blood work done. These symptoms are very general and can point to other things like vitamin deficiency or hormone imbalance. Don’t jump to conclusions. It wouldn’t be wasting your moms time, tell her all these symptoms and you aren’t making them up.

What do you think happened here?

Question by Burnsey.: What do you think happened here?
An older woman i know has Tinnitus (the ringing in your ears that never goes away) and she said that when she was a little girl about 6 or 7 she got it, she talks about how she went to summer camp that was very traumatizing for her and then went home to meet this new boyfriend of her mothers (her father died when she was a baby) talks about how she was mistreated badly emotionally by this new man (soon to be her stepfather) and her mother, and then just stops talking and goes to like ..the next day, ex. she just says “then the next day after i came back from summer camp i woke up with tinnitus.. strange that it’s right after meeting him..” he was an absolutly terrible man and her mother wouldnt treat her well when she was young either. or even when she grew up. so i’m wondering what happened in that period of time that she isn’t really telling. whenever shes telling us stories she says “summer health camp when i was a kid was terrible, when my mom picked me up from summer camp she brought this new boyfriend that was just awful, we all went home. (and then just seems like she skips a section and says) The next day i woke up with ringing in my ears.” and talks abotu how that was very traumatizing, the thing is it doesnt sound very traumatizing, its like shes skipping a part or something then just goes to the next day that she has ringing in her ears. i think that something happened in that amount of time that was traumatizing because you cant just wake up with tinnitus. it’s caused by loud noises to the ear, and maybe there was a fight or something that night maybe physical abuse that she’s not telling or something. i know its possible to get Tinnitus other ways, but it’s rare in children and she never had any symptoms, and her story just seems…sketchy. something just doesn’t seem right like shes hiding something. what do you think could have happened? know what i mean? she gets all weird when talking about this also, like nervous and doesn’t seem comfortable talking about it. i know for a fact she has many secrets. what do you think?

shes obviously keeping something out if she was so detailed about everything and so vague about when it started. if your looking for her to admit it to you, try asking her about details about the day she woke up, or you can just start digging by saying things like “are you SURE that’s what happenend? is there anything your not telling me?” things like that. but i am pretty positive there is a secret being kept

best of luck (:

What in my body is going on?

Question by JJ: What in my body is going on?
I don’t know what is going on with me right now, here’s the symptoms I’ve experienced so far:
1) Fluctuating degrees of Tinnitus in my left ear, possibly in my right, but the one in the left makes it difficult to determine. It goes from difficult to ignore, to so slight the sound of my hand going down a rail covers it up. Started early morning on June 17th, it’s now the 19th for me.
2) I was dozing in my chair a few hours ago, when-and if I’m lying I’m dying-I suddenly feel like someone chucked a ball that hit me in the middle of the forehead. But there’s no-one else home. Never experienced this before.
3) I slept for a short time during the day, when I wake up, I go to put on my glasses, and as I try to focus, my eyes suddenly decide to do their own little dance and start involuntarily bouncing around in their sockets. for a good 5 seconds or more.
4) I may have some sort of sinuses, it feels strange in the area where my inner ear is near my jaw.

Thought it might be Meniere’s disease, but my tinnitus isn’t explosive, it’s a ringing, like choclea damage.

Not sure if it’s all just coincidence, or they’re all part of something else.
Note on 4), it only feels strange when I swallow.
I also have spradic periods of coughing.

People are traumatized by many things, often things that we wouldn’t be fazed by. It isn’t up to us to judge, just accept. And you may not know all the details and don’t really need to.
I knew a lady who lost her voice over something very trivial. She hasn’t spoken in years (although there is no medical reason). She may speak in private, and if so that’s her business and not mine. I find it odd but I’ve never questioned it. We all have our reasons for being the way we are.
